KOTB

The Kids on the Block project funded by BBC Children was concluded in July 2015. We were able to deliver a free activity club for children aged 8-12 years. During the last year of the project we supported 53 children.

The club provided a safe, friendly environment where the children have participated in a range of activities which the children were key in planning themselves.

The project also made actual differences to children’s lives through targeting areas of disadvantage and 53 children:

  • Have improved their knowledge and understanding of healthy food choices which will improve their health and well being.
  • Have improved their understanding of their rights which empowers them to have a say and make decisions about their life including developing confidence and self-esteem.
  • Have improved their knowledge and understanding of the effects of bullying which has helped children voice their issues and concerns and improve their situation.

Over the course of 5 years (2010 – 2015) Kids on the Block supported and empowered 268 children between the ages of 8 – 12 years old living in the ward of Resolven.

Families Together

The Families Together entered its final of funding from Big Lottery Fund. During this time 28 children were able to access free childcare sessions so that their parents could attend training, volunteering and work opportunities. By accessing the free childcare the children have shown more confidence and improved social skills. Children were also given the opportunity to go on walks, access the library, sensory room and music sessions.

Parents have been able to access a number of training courses such as:

  • Councelling
  • Baby and Infant 1st Aid
  • Family Welsh
  • Up-Cycling
  • Yoga
  • Well being

If parents could could not attend training we were able to offer them access to online training that they could do at a convenient time these courses included First Aid Level 2, Food Hygiene Level 2, Preventing Bullying and Child Exploitation parents could access over 17 online courses. All of these courses have enabled parents to up-skill, build self-esteem and confidence, whilst having peer support.

At the Baby and Toddler cafe we were able to provide children and parents a chance to play together with Sensory, Music and Dance sessions. Parent and children were able to have fun and get messy, dance and sing together. Six parents and babies attended baby massage session which helped parents to bond and have quality time with their babies.

Active Kids

Active Kids project funded by Lloyds Bank Foundation came to a conclusion on the 31st May 2015. The service funded for a two year period provided open access play sessions for children living in Resolven and Clyne. The service enabled children and young people aged 5-14 years old to access supervised play sessions twice a week. During the last year of the project we support 111 unique children to access a range of play opportunities within the local community.

The project has benefited children and young people by providing new play experience this year we have continued to work with existing children from the previous year but we have also reached new children and young people. This project enabled us to help children to engage with physical activity through participating in outside and indoor play opportunities, which helps children develop their sense of looking after themselves and keeping fit.

Part of the funding was to recruit 20 children and young people aged between 9-16 years over the two year period and train them in being a representative voice for children and young people of Resolven and also train them in play work skills to volunteer with the project. In the last year we recruited 11 children and young people, in total over the two years 25 children and young people. 7 children and young people remain members of Resolven Youth Forum and 3 have remained volunteering with Resolven Building Blocks.
